This week's topic is the Top Ten Best Debut Novels.
1. Looking for Alaska by John Green (2005) I found John Green through Maureen Johnson's twitter account. If you haven't check out the the Vlogbrothers, you really should. Looking for Alaska is a great book, and Green's following novels don't disappoint either.
2. Audrey, Wait! by Robin Benway (2008) One of my all time favorites. I picked this up while waiting for a flight, and had finished it within a few hours. I want to be best friends with Audrey. Benway's debut novel is amazing and fun. Her second book, The Extraordinary Secrets of April, May and June, was great too.
3. Amy and Roger's Epic Detour by Morgan Matson (2010) One of my favorite debuts from last year. See my review here.
4. The Historian by Elizabeth Kostava (2006) It took me ten chapters to really get into this book, but after I did--whoa. Another all time favorite--it's a great pick for fans of historical fiction and vampires.
5. A Long, Long Time Ago and Essentially True by Brigid Pasulka (2009) I picked up this book because it was set in the city where I stayed at while in Poland--Krakow. It was a gem of a book and Pasulka wove two stories together beautifully.
6. Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging by Louise Rennison (2000) If you haven't read the Georgia Nicholson series, you really should. I don't think I've ever laughed so hard while reading a book. The series is 10 books long, but Rennison really shines in the first book.
7. Something Borrowed by Emily Giffin (2004) Definitely one of my favorite chick lit book out there and I'm completely thrilled they are making this into a movie starring Kate Hudson, Ginnifer Goodwin and (swoon!) John Krasinski. Can't wait to see it in May!
8. The Amber Room by Steve Berry (2003) I'm a closet fan of international thrillers and I adore the way Steve Berry's books combine history with suspense. The Amber Room was a great first novel.
9. Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins (2010) I'm not even done reading this and I know it's amazing. Love it! I can't wait for Perkins's next novel.
And....10. Twilight by Stephenie Meyers (2005) I'm not the biggest fan of Twilight, but if you're going to have a debut novel, this is the way to do it!

ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed the Historian and am hoping to enjoy Anna and the French Kiss soon. Twilight is such a craze as well, as far as debuts go, this one made a big impression on a lot of people!
I really want to read Looking for Alaska. The only John Green I have read is Will Grayson, but I have heard great things about his writing. We share a few books on our lists like Audrey, Anna, and Amy & Roger. So many great debuts to choose from! Twilight definitely deserves a spot.
ReplyDeleteI’m soooo bummed I didn’t include Angus on my list. I had no idea it was Rennison’s debut. Georgia Nicholson rules! I enjoyed the Historian too, but it didn’t quite make my top 10.
