Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Bookish Pet Peeves

Top Ten Tuesday is brought to you by the awesome people at The Broke and The Bookish!

This week's topic is Top Ten Bookish Pet Peeves---the things that are just driving you crazy!

1. Bending pages as a placeholder--USE A BOOKMARK!
2. Love triangles--It seems as though every single book I've been reading has a love triangle. Not something that is going away, but I'm a little tired of it.
3. Receiving a damaged book from a mail order. :(
4. Stains--I hate opening a library book and finding someone else's lunch on the pages.
5. Reading series out of order---it's only happened a few times, but it kind of ruins it.

NEW (the I wrote the above at 5 this morning :/)

6. Movie art on books--Seriously, as much as I love Mandy Moore, I don't need to see her on my Sarah Dessen books. And I don't think the Percy Jackson movie came anywhere close to earning a spot on the book cover.
7. Extra chapters for new editions-- I saw this recently and thought it was pretty lame.
8. Marker on the bottom of my bargain and used books--Stickers and marks! Ugh.
9. No Face Girl--check out Maureen Johnson's books for an example

That's all I can think of right now. I'll have to think about it some more :) What are some of your bookish pet peeves?

  2. I know exactly what you mean about finding lunch in library books... yew, so gross.

  3. I hate reading series books out of order, too. If I ever find out that I've done so by accident, I always feel like I've done something dreadful, and the thought of reading them out of order on purpose - that's just madness! ;-)

  4. I'm really tired of the mysterious, rude/mean/bad boy being the love interest while the nice, supportive best friend gets the shaft. I know it happens, but not to everyone as many of these YA books would have you believe!

I also really hate the bent corners. I find the most random things to use as a bookmark instead of bending my pages. I also try hard to avoid cracking my spines.

  5. I forgot receiving a damaged book in the mail, that happens way to often!

  6. Yes, reading series out of order happens because they're not marked clearly (my pet peeve). And stains or strange hairs in a library book=gross!

  9. Oh gosh, a whole-hearted YES on the pagebending! That's horrible! I also hate it when people aren't careful with their books, like spilling something on it or bending the cover weird ways or ripping (THE HORROR) the pages.

  10. Good point about movie stills being used as cover art - it is annoying, and it generally implies that you're only reading the book because you saw the movie, which is probably not the case. Unexpected book stains are awful too.

  11. Love triangles is a good one.

I had a library book that I really needed for a paper once, and it was so gross and stained that I had to fashion my own temporary book cover so I wouldn't have to touch it. Yuck. Why would someone do that to a book and then return it?

  12. Ha! Yes, the no-face girl on the cover. It's probably why I never picked up a Phillipa Gregory book.

  13. Love Triangles. Sometimes I hate them. Sometimes I love them. I only like them when the 2nd guy that comes along takes you by surprise and you really do want the character to end up with him! I hate it when I really like the first guy and then other guy comes along and tries to screw things up. That just sucks.
